Bulldogs Improve To 4-4 After Beating Yukon 34-22

Oct 17, 2016

The Yukon Millers (0-7) hosted Edmond Memorial on a wet and cold Thursday night with hopes of getting their first win of the season, but Bulldogs Grant Decker, Chris Pope, Delvon McNeely and company had other plans as they improved to 4-4 with a 34-22 win.

The Bulldogs focused on the run game with their first drive, having the first five running plays by junior running back McNeely. This series led to a crucial fourth-and-8, where senior quarterback Decker was intercepted in the end zone by Yukon senior Tyrese Antwine.

The Millers capitalized on the turnover by driving the ball down to the red zone. Yukon eventually had to settle for a field goal by junior kicker Ryan Lucas.

Memorial would not let them have the lead for long though, with McNeely running a 64-yard touchdown on the first play of their ensuing drive. McNeely's touchdown was the last score of the first quarter, 7-3.

Yukon started the second quarter strong scoring a touchdown on their first drive from senior running back Chandler Rich on a 2-yard run. The Millers were successful on a 2-point conversion going up 11-7.

The Bulldogs took back the lead later in the second quarter with McNeely getting another touchdown run. Memorial tried to match Yukon's 2-point conversion but failed making the score 13-11.

Yukon ended the quarter like they started it - scoring a touchdown. This time from sophomore quarterback Jackson Young who got in on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The Millers ran a fake field goal and successfully converted on yet another 2-point conversion ending the first half with Yukon on top 19-13.

Memorial received the ball at the start of the second half. They ran a no-huddle offense that got them all the way to the Yukon 15 yard line, where they decided to go for it on fourth-and-6 and failed to convert turning the ball over on downs.

Memorial faced another crucial fourth-and-8 at the Yukon 27-yard line, but this time the Bulldogs scored a touchdown with Decker throwing to junior wide receiver Brendan Mitchell for the 27-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing drive, Bulldog senior linebacker Kaiden Grover intercepted Young giving the ball back to Memorial. But Memorial would not keep the ball for long with Decker throwing an interception right back to the Millers.

The score at the end of the third quarter was 20-19.

The Millers scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a 23-yard field goal by Lucas 22-20 Yukon leading.

Memorial's junior kickoff returner Pope took back the ensuing kickoff on a sensational 72-yard touchdown return 28-22 taking the lead and never looking back.

The Bulldogs sealed the game with a 4-yard touchdown run by McNeely being his third touchdown run. Making the final score of the game 34-22.

Memorial plays at Broken Arrow in two weeks on Oct. 28.
